I'm Officially Adopting the Régnier Brothers (Don't Tell Them)
Like many Canadians, I tuned in to the season premiere of The Amazing Race Canada tonight. However, this year presents a unique dilemma...
Who should I be supporting?
On one hand, there are Sacha and Sébastien Régnier, two Red River Métis brothers from Winnipeg representing both their Métis heritage and Manitoba’s Francophone community on the race.
Here’s where it gets interesting...
My maiden name is Régnier.
Yes, really.
Am I suggesting we might be distant relatives without any evidence?
Absolutely.
Is that going to change?
Not at all.
For the duration of the season, I’ll be referring to them as “the boys.” If they win a leg, I’ll proudly say, “That’s my family!” If they encounter challenges, well... perhaps we’re from different branches of the family tree.
However, there is another perspective to consider...
I am also supporting Chayla and Chyana, two Cree and Métis sisters competing this season. It is inspiring to see strong women take on such a demanding competition, and I find myself equally invested in their journey.
So here I am—
Part Team Régnier.
Part Team Sisters.
Essentially navigating a friendly internal rivalry... one that neither team is aware of.
As a fellow Red River Métis, it is particularly meaningful to see increased Indigenous representation on programs like The Amazing Race Canada. Showcasing diverse cultures, families, and communities reinforces that Indigenous peoples are not only part of history, they are very much present and thriving today.
Unless one of my “new cousins” faces off against the sisters in the final...
I will continue to support both teams.
May the best team succeed.
(Although, if the Régniers win, I may feel inclined to mention it at the next family gathering.)
Season Notes
I will be updating this post throughout the season to highlight notable moments from “my cousins” and the sisters, whether significant achievements, memorable challenges, or meaningful experiences.
By the finale, I may very well have compiled a comprehensive record of my entirely unofficial Amazing Race family.
