Collection: Deb Malcolm

Deb Malcolm is a self-taught artist from Toronto, Ontario, whose creative work has been inspired by a personal exploration of her Métis heritage. After discovering her Métis ancestry, Deb began researching her family history on her birth mother's side and learning more about the rich history and culture of the Métis people. Recognized by the Manitoba Métis Federation, she continues to deepen her understanding of her heritage and the traditions that inspire her art.

Drawing influence from the intricate floral beadwork patterns traditionally found on Métis clothing, moccasins, and carrying bags, Deb creates distinctive works using a technique known as Dot Art. Her artwork reimagines these traditional designs through thousands of carefully placed dots of acrylic paint.

Using a stylus, each individual dot is applied by hand to a wood canvas, creating vibrant compositions with remarkable detail and texture. As the paint dries, the raised dots resemble beads, giving the finished piece a dimensional quality that echoes the beauty of traditional beadwork. Each artwork is then sealed with a protective varnish to preserve its colour and texture.

Through her unique artistic process, Deb honours the beauty of Métis-inspired design while creating contemporary works that celebrate culture, craftsmanship, and personal discovery.
