Francis Dick - Kwakwaka'wakw Artist

Francis Dick is a contemporary Indigenous artist of the Kwakwaka'wakw Nation. Born in 1959 in ‘Yalis (Alert Bay), British Columbia, she is a member of the Musgamakw Dzawada'enuxw First Nation of Kingcome Inlet. Francis is a descendant of the Kawadelakala (Supernatural Wolf), a central figure in the origin stories of the Kingcome people, and her work reflects a deep connection to the artistic traditions of the Dzawada'enuxw.
An accomplished visual artist, writer, and speaker, Francis draws inspiration from her cultural heritage, personal experiences, and creative vision. Her early works often explored the legends and teachings of her family, particularly those connected to the Kawadelakala. As her artistic practice evolved, she expanded her subject matter while continuing to weave Indigenous values, perspectives, and cultural influences throughout her work.
Creativity is at the heart of Francis's life and artistic journey. Through painting, storytelling, and public speaking, she explores themes of identity, transformation, resilience, and healing. Her work has resonated with audiences across cultures and has earned her recognition as an influential voice within the Indigenous arts community.
Francis has exhibited internationally, with her artwork featured throughout North America, Asia, and Europe. She has also been invited to share her experiences and insights with community organizations, women's groups, and educational institutions around the world.
Now based in Victoria, British Columbia, Francis continues to create meaningful work that reflects both her personal journey and her commitment to cultural expression. As she explains, “Before anything else, my work is about honouring my life process, my journey through my fires, from places of pain and darkness to places that I might stand in my truth; my work is not a career, it's a way of life.”
Through her art, Francis Dick invites viewers to reflect on their own journeys while celebrating the strength, wisdom, and enduring traditions of Indigenous culture.
