What do wolves, coyotes and Métis history have in common? More than you might think. The Lesser Blood was inspired by the emergence of the Métis as a distinct people and culture, and by the challenges of belonging between two worlds. Here's why I chose wolves and coyotes to tell a story about prejudice, acceptance, family and the creation of something new.

When I began writing the story that eventually became Grandmother, I knew one thing for certain.

There would be bison.

I wish I could tell you that Grandmother arrived in my imagination fully formed, wise, strong and very definitely a bison, and demanded that I tell her story. But she did not. The truth is much less poetic.

I wanted to write about bison because of their importance in Métis history.

This week's Amazing Race Canada took us along the shores of Lake Huron, from Grand Bend to Sarnia, and while Sacha and Sébastien Régnier are still racing, we had to say goodbye to Chayla and Chyana.

Wondering if it’s okay to wear Indigenous art? Absolutely. There’s an important difference between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation. We look at where that line is, why regalia is different, and why supporting Indigenous artists by wearing and enjoying their work is something to celebrate. If it speaks to you, wear it.

Well, after winning last week's leg, I suppose I couldn't reasonably demand that the cousins win again.

Could I?

Sacha and Sébastien Régnier didn't make it three first-place finishes this week, but they turned in another strong performance, finishing fourth as The Amazing Race Canada raced through Scarborough and Markham, Ontario.

And at this point, I'm feeling pretty comfortable about my decision to adopt them.

After a tougher sixth-place finish in Montréal last week, our Régnier cousins Sacha and Sébastien came roaring back, taking first place in Peterborough and the Kawarthas and earning their second leg win of the season.

Rio de Janeiro wasted no time introducing itself. It was vibrant, noisy, colourful, and occasionally soaking wet. But never boring. Here’s how we spent four memorable days in this extraordinary city.

Traveling Brazil from north to south gave me a deep appreciation for just how many Brazils exist within one country,  shaped by geography, history, culture, and rhythm. Even when illness or logistics got in the way, the experience was rich, layered, and unforgettable.
