Benjamin Chee Chee, Ojibway Artist (1944-1977)

Benjamin Chee Chee was a celebrated Ojibway artist born in Temagami, Ontario. Largely self-taught, he developed a distinctive artistic voice that would leave a lasting impact on Canadian Indigenous art. Despite facing significant challenges early in life, including the loss of his father when he was an infant and a separation from his mother, Chee Chee pursued art with remarkable determination and purpose.
A prominent figure in the second generation of Woodland artists, Chee Chee helped shape one of Canada's most influential Indigenous art movements. While many Woodland artists focused on traditional narratives and symbolism, Chee Chee developed a unique style characterized by elegant simplicity, fluid lines, and a modern, minimalist approach. His striking depictions of birds and wildlife became his signature, earning widespread recognition for their beauty, balance, and emotional depth.
Influenced by both Indigenous traditions and contemporary artistic movements, Chee Chee's work bridged cultures and appealed to audiences around the world. His ability to convey movement, spirit, and meaning through clean, economical lines distinguished him from many of his contemporaries and established him as one of the most recognizable artists of his generation.
At the height of a rapidly growing career as a painter and printmaker, Benjamin Chee Chee passed away in 1977 at the age of thirty-two. Though his life was brief, his artistic legacy continues to inspire collectors, artists, and admirers across Canada and beyond. His work remains celebrated for its timeless elegance, cultural significance, and enduring contribution to Indigenous art.
