Collection: Maxine Noel

Maxine Noel is a celebrated Native visual artist of Santee and Oglala heritage, born on the Birdtail Reserve in Manitoba. Her stunning work graces the collections of esteemed institutions such as the Canadian Museum of History, the University of Western Ontario, the Canadian Native Arts Foundation in Toronto, and the Whetung Ojibwa Centre. Maxine passionately believes in the universal connection that binds all cultures, and she is committed to fostering understanding between Native and non-Native communities.

As a remarkable role model, her dedication, resilience, and self-determination inspire us all. Maxine selflessly champions causes that uplift our communities. Her poignant piece, "Not Forgotten," honors the memory of missing and murdered Indigenous women and sees all royalties donated to the Native Women's Association of Canada. This powerful artwork played a vital role in the2019 campaign by Artists Against Racism along British Columbia's Highway of Tears, addressing the tragic inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous girls and women along Highway16.

In recognition of her immense contributions, Noel was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2018.
