Roy Henry Vickers, Tsimshian Artist

Roy Henry Vickers, Tsimshian Artist

Roy Henry Vickers is one of Canada's most celebrated Indigenous artists, internationally recognized for his distinctive limited-edition prints that capture the beauty, spirit, and stories of the Pacific Northwest. In addition to his accomplishments as a visual artist, Roy is an accomplished sculptor, author, publisher, design advisor, and sought-after keynote speaker.

A respected leader within Indigenous communities, Roy has dedicated much of his life to promoting healing, recovery, and personal growth. As a hereditary chief who has received several traditional names from Northwest Coast First Nations, he is widely recognized for both his artistic achievements and his contributions to community well-being.

Throughout his distinguished career, Roy has received numerous honours and awards. In 1994, Maclean's magazine included him in its Annual Honour Roll of Extraordinary Canadian Achievers, making him the first artist ever to receive that distinction. His many accolades include appointment to the Order of British Columbia in 1998, the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in 2003, appointment as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2006, and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.

Roy's artwork has earned international acclaim, and the enduring success of the Roy Henry Vickers Gallery reflects the universal appeal of his vision. Designed and built by Roy in 1986, the gallery was inspired by traditional Northwest Coast longhouses and became a landmark destination in the coastal village of Tofino on Vancouver Island.

In 2004, Roy returned with his family to Hazelton, British Columbia, where he continues to live and create along the banks of the Skeena River. Through his art, writing, and community leadership, Roy Henry Vickers continues to inspire audiences around the world with messages of hope, connection, and respect for the natural world.
