Collection: Cody Houle - Anishinaabe Artist

Cody James Houle (he/him) is a self-taught Anishinaabe artist based in Brantford, Ontario. Raised in North Bay, Ontario, Cody found comfort, healing, and purpose through a deep connection to nature and a lifelong desire to create meaningful work.

Growing up surrounded by the impacts of intergenerational trauma and colonialism, Cody struggled with feelings of shame about his Indigenous identity. Through art, he has reclaimed that identity with pride, using his work to express strength, resilience, and cultural connection.

Although he had been creating artwork for years, Cody only recognized visual art as his true passion in his early thirties. Since then, he has become an active and respected voice in the Indigenous arts community. His work ranges from abstract compositions to vibrant floral imagery, though his Woodland-style paintings remain closest to his heart and cultural roots.

For Cody, art is a form of teaching. Every painting carries stories, lessons, and opportunities for reflection. He believes that artists of the past can mentor future generations through the work they leave behind, inspiring both artistic growth and personal understanding.

Passionate about encouraging creativity in others, Cody hopes to inspire Indigenous youth and communities across Turtle Island to express themselves through art. He believes that creating is an act of empowerment, healing, and self-discovery—and that Indigenous life itself is art.
