The Artist

We are sad to let you know that Richard Shorty passed away on February 7, 2024 after a battle with cancer. Richard was born in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory in 1959 and belonged to the Kwanlin Dun First Nation, Northern Tutchone. In 1978, Richard moved to Vancouver, and had been splitting his time between the Lower Mainland and Whitehorse ever since. In the early 1980’s, Richard started painting West Coast Native design and soon developed his own distinct style, using the wildlife form of the animal and adding his native design on the inside of the form. This style blended his traditional roots and with a contemporary flair. Richard’s versatility and creativity were truly exceptional, and evident in the drums, paddles, masks, boxes, rattles, and paintings he produced. We were blessed to work with Richard for almost thirty years, and to assist him in sharing his culture with people from all over the world. He was a kind and humble man and will be missed greatly.

Richard is survived by his daughters Violet and Darcie, his grandchildren Raiden, Zuri, Emmalee, and Haleequin, his partner Roseanne, and his sisters Annie Ladue, Laura Ladue and Carol Shorty, and many other family and friends. He was predeceased by his daughter Nicole. Richard will be buried in Whitehorse near his family.
